Episode 19: E.A. Copen, Author

E.A. Copen lives deep in the deep dark woods outside one of the most haunted cities in Ohio. While working a boring retail job, she entertained herself with stories of the fantastic, some of which became books like Guilty by Association, Death Rites, and Broken Empire. She speaks three languages fluently: English, Latin, and sarcasm. E.A. is currently studying to become proficient in memes.

Episode 17: Paul Woodson, Narrator

In this episode I chat with the fantastic narrator, Paul Woodson!

Paul has recorded over 150 audiobooks in many genres, including WWII European History, American History, Contemporary & Historical Romance, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Classics, and YA. With a BFA from Boston University’s School for the Arts, Paul spent many years as a professional AEA and SAG-AFTRA actor, working onstage and (occasionally on film) across the USA and Europe, before becoming a full-time voice artist and audiobook narrator. His facility in German and French has garnered him much work in narrating European WWII histories, and his early years in the UK (where he began reading at the age of 3), and facility with accents have led to his narration of many British titles.

Episode 13: Neil Hellegers, Narrator

In this episode I chat with one of my all-time favorite people, narrator extraordinaire, Neil Hellegers! We talk about acting on stage, screen, and behind the mic – the pro’s and con’s of that awesome beard, and much MUCH more!

Neil hails from the green hills and not-so-busy streets of River Vale, NJ, where he divided his time between theatre, literature, percussion, and policy debate. He is happy to note that he has managed to maintain this balance for the entirety of his adult life.

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, PA, with a B.A. in Theatre Arts and a Minor in Psychology, Neil acquired a M.F.A in Acting from the Trinity Rep Conservatory, in Providence, RI. He returned to NYC in 2003, and, since then, has made a career of theatrical performance, percussion, theatre education, and audiobook narration, and is currently living in Brooklyn, NY, with his wife, rambunctious son, and their mutt!

Starting his professional acting career working at festivals and and international tours performing Shakespeare opened his mind to the sweeping potential of theatre in performance to inspire and delight, a sensibility he has carried into contemporary theatre, new play workshops, film, TV and commercial work, and audiobook narration. Neil also has sought and developed educational opportunities, considering teaching as a means of advancing the craft of both student and teacher, and also a vehicle for social and political change. Neil has played drums in a wide variety of bands and musical groups, from punk, to prog, to jazz, to folk, and in theatrical performance, most notably for the Philly-based-90s-progressive-instrumental-rock-band, Lexicon.

As an audiobook narrator, Neil specializes in fiction, genre and non. A voracious reader of science fiction and fantasy, Neil strives to bring the same thrill of the possible to the actual, with non-fiction ranging from self-help both spiritual and practical, history, and cultural studies. Recording at home from a Studiobricks One Plus, he is an Audible Approved Producer, and has worked for numerous publishers, including Tantor Media, Penguin Random House Audio, Blackstone Audio, Audible Studios, Deyan Audio, Spoken Realms, and more. He is a proud member of SAG AFTRA.

Episode 12: C. Steven Manley, Author

In this episode I’m joined by author and prolific podcasting talent, C. Steven Manley!

The man that most people just call ‘Chuck’ was born in the winter of the year of the summer of love to a couple of crazy kids from the deep woods of Alabama.

He came up the rough way, riding out his excessively dramatic home life on a steady diet of escapism courtesy of comic books, Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels, and any kind of TV show or movie that could show him a hero he could believe in, fictional or otherwise.

Straight out of high school, he joined the USAF and got out after only a single tour. He never wanted to be just one thing so he set about exploring the country and collecting skills, knowledge, and interests like a boxer collecting scars.

Eventually he settled into the healthcare world where he worked for well on thirteen years before getting disillusioned and burned out. Fortunately, a lovely young woman had taken pity on him by then and joined her life to his giving him beautiful children and the chance to stay home and care for them while writing his books.

There is irony in that because through all his life of seeking to not be ‘one thing’ and live a life filled with the road less traveled, he has always been a writer.
He has also always wondered why authors are expected to write these things in third person.

Join C. Steven Manley and me as we talk about his writing process, his love of audio, how he got into this whole writing mess to begin with, and much more!

Get a peek into what C. Steven Manley is working on now, what he’s got coming up – and even a few spoilers dropped here and there!
